Description
Division of Economic Justice—New York City
Regulatory Project Attorney or Special Counsel (24-Month Term Positions)
Application Deadline is August 16, 2024
To apply, please visit https://ag.ny.gov/job-postings/attorneys
The Office of the New York State Attorney General (OAG) is seeking attorneys with complex rulemaking experience to work on drafting regulations implementing landmark legislation intended to preserve the online privacy of young people and protect them from the harms of addictive social media feeds. The selected attorneys will be hired for 24-month terms with the possibility to extend for an additional 12 months.
In June 2024, New York State established the nation’s most stringent protections to safeguard young people on social media. The SAFE For Kids Act, the first bill of its kind to be signed into law in any state across the nation, requires social media companies to restrict access to addictive feeds on their platforms for users under the age of 18. The New York Child Data Protection Act prohibits online sites and connected devices from collecting, using, sharing, or selling the personal data of anyone under the age of 18. Both laws provide the OAG with regulatory authority, with the SAFE For Kids Act requiring final OAG regulations before it takes effect; the OAG has been further authorized to enforce both laws to ensure compliance.
